In a reminder that Facebook is useful for more than Likes and advertising revenue, the platform has just updated its Safety Check feature.
Safety House
During the Paris attacks last November, Safety Check allowed users to let friends know they were OK.
Now Facebook is extending the reach of Safety Check, allowing the feature to be activated on local trends.
Community keep
Now Safety Check monitors for mentions of events such as natural disasters and terrorist attacks.
Once the event has been confirmed, Safety Check will prompt users in the affected area to tag themselves as safe. Users can also invite nearby friends to tag their safety status.
Safety Check is now available in over 80 languages.
