If a carrot doesn't work, sometimes the stick suffices.
That's the approach Facebook seems to be taking with its latest move: withdrawing messaging support from the mobile web to push users onto Messenger.
Get the message?
Facebook mobile web users are now being greeted with the glib message:
"Your conversations are moving to Messenger".
For now the warning can be dismissed with a tap, but soon Facebook is going to follow through on its promise.
App to tap
While bullish, the move isn't entirely unprecedented. After all it's been some time since Facebook removed this functionality from its primary app.
And while Messenger is undoubtedly popular (with close to 1 billion active users), there are many Direct Messaging alternatives on offer.
Even if Facebook has flexed its muscle a little too vigorously in this instance, it can console itself with the knowledge that it owns WhatsApp.
