Google Expands AI Search To YouTube

Google is testing a new AI-powered search experience within YouTube, introducing more conversational discovery tools for users. The feature, called Ask YouTube, expands Google’s wider AI search strategy and brings more interactive search functionality directly into YouTube.

The update is significant given YouTube’s role as one of the world’s largest search platforms. Often described as the second largest search engine after Google itself, YouTube has become a primary destination for users looking for tutorials, product reviews, explainers, entertainment and how-to content.

Search behaviour on the platform already differs from traditional web search in several ways. Users frequently search using longer, more intent-driven queries, while recommendations, watch history and creator familiarity all influence discovery. Adding conversational AI search into that environment could further change how users navigate and consume video content.

Ask YouTube Adds Conversational Search

Ask YouTube allows users to enter detailed, natural-language queries instead of relying solely on traditional keyword searches.

According to YouTube, the feature is designed to help users explore topics in a more interactive way. For example, users can ask for help planning a three-day road trip from San Francisco to Santa Barbara and receive a structured itinerary rather than a standard list of videos.

Responses can include a combination of long-form videos, Shorts and text-based information, alongside local recommendations and suggested stops.

Users can also ask follow-up questions as part of the same search flow. In YouTube’s example, someone planning a road trip could ask where to find good coffee nearby, with the system generating additional recommendations based on the earlier query.

The experience also surfaces relevant video segments, titles and channel details to help users navigate directly to relevant content.

Rather than simply presenting a ranked list of videos, the system aims to provide contextual answers supported by content from across the platform.

YouTube’s Search Role Continues To Grow

YouTube has increasingly positioned itself as both a content platform and a discovery engine. Research over recent years has consistently shown users turning to YouTube not only for entertainment, but also for learning, product research and decision-making.

For younger audiences in particular, video-first search behaviour has become more common across categories including travel, technology, finance, food and retail.

That shift has made YouTube increasingly important within broader search and discovery strategies. Brands have invested heavily in creator partnerships, educational content and video SEO to improve visibility within YouTube’s recommendation and search systems.

The introduction of conversational AI search could further strengthen YouTube’s role within Google’s wider search ecosystem.

For marketers, the update may reinforce the value of searchable, informative video content that aligns with conversational user intent rather than isolated keyword targeting alone.

Early Stage Testing

Ask YouTube remains in limited testing for now. The feature is currently available to YouTube Premium users aged 18 and over who opt into YouTube’s experimental features programme.

Google has indicated that it plans to expand testing more broadly in the future, although no wider rollout timeline has been confirmed.

The company continues to test AI-driven search and discovery tools across its platforms as part of its broader push toward more conversational user experiences.
