Instagram could be preparing to add music to your Stories, according to code discovered in the most recent Android build.
Listen while you look
In the not too distant future, users will not only be able to stylise Stories with gifs and filters but will be able to add “music stickers” to their snaps.
The goal is to make Instagram Stories more entertaining to observe. The app is also testing a way to automatically detect the song being played and display the relevant artist info.
The new musical feature could be a way to capitalise on the popular lip syncing app called Musically, as Instagram is quite adept at following competitive innovations.
In the works for a while
Parent company Facebook has been testing music and soundtrack features with Sound Collection since 2017. Having secured licensing deals with Sony, Universal, Warner, and others, Facebook is in a good position.
The “music stickers” are meant to focus on tabs such as “Trending,” “Moods,” and “Genres.” With Snapchat intent on launching a music video streaming feature of its own, the tug of war continues.
Apps like Sounds and Soundtracking have made early attempts to be the sound of Instagram but never gained enough traction to do so. “Music stickers” may be the next big thing. The competition will decide.
