Following fixes in December and January, Google is further modifying the interfaces of Google Docs, Slides and Sheets.
Switcheroos
Regular users of G Suite will notice a re-ordering of items in the ‘File’, ‘Edit’ and ‘Tools’ menus.
The reshuffle is meant to be more practical and intuitive, so let’s hope the change comes naturally.
Also, the ‘Spelling’ function (in the ‘Tools’ menu) will be renamed ‘Check Spelling’. And ‘Select none’ will disappear from the ‘Edit’ menu.
Cleaner Sheets
A few new changes will only matter to people who use the spreadsheet program Sheets.
For example, all items in the ‘Data’ and ‘Format’ menus will be re-ordered. Also, the ‘Filter’ function will be renamed ‘Create a filter’ and ‘Validation’ will be renamed ‘Data validation’.
All for the user
Google says it’s all in the service of user satisfaction, being based on observed usage data as well as explicit user feedback. This is in stark contrast to some other office suites, who sometimes seem afraid to rock the boat with modifications.
These changes will come in quickly. If you use Google’s office suite, you might see they’ve already taken effect. If not, they’ll certainly come within a couple of weeks.
Will Google’s willingness to update features and layout see G Suite succeed over time, or will it lose to more consistent competitors?
