Google’s global cloud database, Cloud Spanner, got a few updates recently that promise to make the service more reliable, and even bigger.
Spanner in the Works
Cloud Spanner now has multi-region support, which means databases are closer to clients in different regions. Previously, all of Cloud Spanner’s data was hosted in one area.
Besides a speed bump, this means if there’s an accident in your region, your data will stay secure.

But perhaps the more significant update was the new Service Level Agreement. It guarantees that Spanner’s databases will have 99.999% accessibility. Yes, that’s five nines.
Translated, that means Cloud Spanner should experience less than five minutes downtime every year.
This means less chance of AdWords (and profits) being down.
If this sounds good, Google reckons they can have you up and running on Cloud Spanner in four quick clicks.
