Wearables are taking another step to the mainstream, with Levi Jeans launching a Google-connected fashion jacket.
Functional fashion
Levis boast about their history of product innovation. Now, it’s partnering with Google to deliver a ‘first of its kind in wearable technology’.
It specifically intended to be a fashion item ‘that keeps users connected… without missing a moment in real life.’
The Levi’s Commuter Trucker Jacket with Jacquard is available in the USA as of October 2017, with global distribution not yet publicly scheduled.
Powered by Jacquard
Google has woven its new wearable tech right into the Levi’s denim. Called ‘Jacquard’, it senses gestures and controls communications, navigation and entertainment.
According to the technology promo page, it is all controlled with ‘a literal brush of your cuff’. The promotional video shows it responding to taps and swipes, giving directions and reading out received text messages.
The new jacket will work with a Google Account and an internet-connected device. You might expect it to be exclusive to Android, but pre-release info shows it will be compatible with iOS too.

Product managers with a genuine Jacquard-related idea are invited to contact the project directly via jacquard-partnerships@google.com.
