Facebook tweaks News Feed to favour video

Facebook can't get enough of video at the moment. The social network recently unveiled a Video Tab, and has just tweaked the News Feed to give users more actions when it comes to video.

Video vision

Facebook announced the news in a blog post.

"We have learned that certain actions people take on a video, such as choosing to turn on sound or making the video full screen, are good signs they wanted to see that video, even if they didn’t want to like it.

"Today, we want to share an update to News Feed ranking that takes into account these actions to help people see more of the videos they care about and fewer of the videos they don’t," wrote Meihong Wang, Engineering Manager, and Yue Zhuo, Software Engineer.

Ticket time

Facebook already tweaks the News Feed so people who positively interact with videos will see more pop up.

Now users have additional actions, including the ability to view videos in full screen at high definition.

YouTube smack down?

Video is booming on Facebook at the moment. Back in September 1 billion videos were watched every day on the network. That figure is now 4 billion.

If Facebook can leverage big data about what its 1.44 billion prefer to watch, it might take a step closer to snatching YouTube's video crown.
