LinkedIn passes 5 million in Australia

LinkedIn has just passed a major local milestone: 5 million Australian members and counting. That's close to a quarter of the population.

A lot to like

The figure is more impressive considering one million new members have joined in the past six months. In 2008 LinkedIn had just 540,000 Australian members.

“This incredible milestone means that almost all Australian professionals are now up and running with a LinkedIn profile – an astonishing achievement that is a testament to our members, partners, clients and staff,” LinkedIn's Cliff Rosenberg wrote in a blog post

To give context, Facebook has over 12 million Australian users.

Industries leaders

The top Australian industries represented on LinkedIn are IT & Services, Construction, Financial Services, Education Management and Hospital & Health Care.

Australian entrepreneurs including Alan Joyce (Qantas CEO), Mike Smith (ANZ, CEO), Creel Price (Entrepreneur and founder, Entreprenaissance Movement) and Matt Barrie (CEO, Freelancer.com) are part of LinkedIn's Global Influencer Program

Global growth

Internationally, LinkedIn is expanding rapidly. There are 259 million LinkedIn members worldwide, with two people signing up to the platform every second.
