2016 may well be defined by the advances and arm-wrestles across live video streaming.
The latest arrow to be launched in the jostling space: YouTube now allows live-streaming on mobile.
Mobile first
YouTube announced the update on its Creator Blog.
"Today, we are announcing a new chapter in bringing the power of live video to creators everywhere. Soon, we’ll be putting the power of YouTube live streaming in the palm of your hands.
"YouTube mobile live streaming will be baked right into the core YouTube mobile app."
Shake and bake
To start a live stream, you need to tap the red capture button on the right corner of the screen.
Once you've selected a photo to use as a thumbnail, YouTube says you'll be ready to stream and chat to your fans in near real time.
Mobile streaming will sport all the regular YouTube app features including search, recommendations, and playlists.
Playing catch up
YouTube was one of the first players to offer live streaming, way back in 2011.
Over the years YouTube has live streamed events such as Felix Baumgartner's leap from space, and the Royal Wedding in 2011.
However this is the first time live streaming has come to mobile – a move no doubt prompted by Facebook Live's recent advances in the space.
