In its continuing march to world domination under the approving wing of Facebook, Instagram now lets users share content via its mobile website.
Mobile first, but only just
Until now, the vast majority of people use Instagram via its native app. Indeed, web and desktop options for the platform have been virtually non-existent.
The strategy worked – Instagram now has over 600 million users, and a healthy presence in most developed markets.
Yet as growth slows in these regions, providing a more robust mobile website gives users in developing markets, who may have slower internet speeds and higher data costs, the ability to ‘Gram at will.
Out and about
Instagram’s new mobile site now lets users share photos, and features and slimmed down tab. Filters, video uploads, Stories, and Direct Messaging don’t make the cut.
The update follows Facebook’s move into developing markets, with the release of the Facebook Lite and Messenger Lite apps. And with 80% of Instagram users residing out the US, the refreshed mobile website could see that number rise.
Have you ever used mobile websites instead of apps? Let us know how it went in the Comments.
