Google’s Inbox, on the way out

After about four years of playing second fiddle, Google is killing-off its email organiser app Inbox.

Begin the migration

Inbox will be over and out by March 2019. It is being phased out in what Google is calling ‘a more focussed approach’.

G Suite Admins can make enterprise users switch earlier, if they’re so inclined.

All users of Google’s Inbox app are being pushed towards the more mainstream Gmail app.

While not everyone is happy about it, consolidation into a single Google-developed email client will obviously simplify the catalogue.

The differences between Inbox and the basic Gmail were never particularly well sold, so some consumers simply went with the more familiar brand.

Gmail to get the best of it

Google has used Inbox by Gmail to test various email ideas and AI assisted processes that seemed like they might be popular.

Where it’s worked, Google says they’ve learned the lessons well. Appreciated features have or will jump to the main (and significantly more popular) Gmail app.

Inbox’s memorial landing page specifically mentions snooze, nudges and Smart Reply making their way to the ‘new Gmail’.

What is your favourite email feature that Gmail is yet to deliver?

Copy Transmission is a Melbourne-based agency :: Better Brands. Loud & Clear.

Users of Google’s Inbox app are being pushed to migrate to the more mainstream Gmail app.
