As of now, Australian webmasters can search and secure domain names via Google.
Google Domains unveiled
If you’re Australian and you’ve got a Google account, you’ve now got easy access to Google Domains.
The service is still in Beta, but has launched to folk in Australia and 14 other countries. Actually, the Americans have been able to get domains from Google for awhile already, but it unlocked for the rest of us at the end of February.
The value prop
The price list is competitive and straightforward, (i.e. not obfuscated by mundane ‘special offers’,) but not earth-shattering. Its main value proposition will probably be its big-G brand, and the potential for practical simplifications.
For example, G Suite admins can take advantage of Google Domains integrations, and they are incentivised to do so.
Additionally, WHOIS privacy and Cloud DNS are both free default options, while DNSSEC is free (but not default).
No for .au
Although the service is finally open to the Australian market, it’s not yet totally targeted at them.
At this stage, Google does not offer access to Australian top-level domains. That means .com.au, .net.au, .org.au and .net.au are all off the menu.
Interested in switching your domain holdings to Google, or is it all too much of a technical hassle?
