Do you watch hours upon hours of YouTube content and channels? If so, the world’s most trafficked website can track how much time spent watching videos.
Do YouTube less
In a recent official YouTube post labeled Tools to Take Charge of Your Digital Wellbeing, the platform focused on “time watched.”
According to YouTube, “[the] goal is to provide a better understanding of time spent on YouTube to best fit into your life.”
What it means to the user
Users will be able to sign into YouTube and access their watched hours through the account menu and can access data by the minute and hour, as well as monthly and daily averages.
Time watched stats are based on total watching history, meaning if your history is disabled, stats won’t be tracked. Videos removed or watched in incognito mode will also be exempt from tracking data.
Facebook and Instagram are also among the trend of tracking time management to foster more responsible engagement habits. All in all, the platforms are sharing information they already have and the result could be healthier use.
The real question is, do you really want to know?
Would you be interested in tracking your own viewing habits? Do you think well being is the true intent of sharing the data? Let us know in the comments.
