In its continuing efforts to fight fake news and bring balance to the News Feed, Facebook is letting select users follow Topics, not just friends and Pages.
Topical update
The “Topics to Follow” box appears in the News Feed and is populated with topics – presumably pulled from your interests. Categories cover the gamut from Sports and Horror Movies to Ocean Science.
Tapping on a topic dials up a separate feed composed of posts and Pages related to the selected topic. If you tap on any of these, they’ll start popping up in your regular News Feed.
World view
Topics could help provide users with a more curated News Feed, with a greater variety of voices around the same issue. It could also help brands get exposed to new users.
However it should be noted that so far Facebook has kept topics on neutral ground, so don’t expect “Trump” or “Immigration” to pop up anytime soon.
